MICHAEL PEGG

BExSci&NutMClExPhys

A second-degree black belt with over 20 years in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, he's also a Master's-qualified Clinical Exercise Physiologist

Head Coach, Black Belt 2nd Degree, Bachelor of Exercise Science and Nutrition, Masters of Clinical Exercise Physiology

Michael brings over 20 years of experience in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and an extensive background in Exercise Physiology within clinical, and performance settings. His coaching philosophy is built around movement quality, long-term physical health, mental resilience, and sustainable performance.

He believes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is more than a martial art, it is a tool for personal growth, confidence, self-discipline and lifelong wellbeing. His coaching combines evidence-based training principles with a highly individualised approach, recognising that every student learns, moves, and progresses differently.

What sets him apart most, though, is how he treats people. Mike coaches the beginner who's nervous about their first class with the same attention he gives the competitor preparing for a tournament.

Michael has extensive experience in rehabilitation, sports performance, motor learning and development, mental health, behaviour change, chronic disease management, and exercise interventions for neurological conditions. This clinical background gives him a unique ability to help people develop strong foundations, train safely, and overcome physical or psychological barriers with confidence.

Whether working with athletes, beginners, children, or individuals with complex health needs, Michael focuses on helping people move better, build resilience, and perform at their best through intelligent coaching and meaningful connection.

MARTIN MALONEY

BEdGradCertREMEdLeadDipMin&Theol

Coach, Black Belt First Degree, Bachelor of education, graduate certificate in religious education, Masters in educational leadership, Diploma ministry and theology

A high school principal by profession, Martin brings the same depth of thought to the mats that he brings to education. As a leader in one of Nambour's high schools, he understands people, how they learn, what motivates them, and how to bring the best out in them.

artin's kimura is a thing of beauty — he sets it up quietly, locks it in tight, and by the time you realise what's happening, the grip is already on and the rotation has started.

As a jiu jitsu practitioner, he is a consummate student. Having started training in 2007, he remains forever enthusiastic about the acquisition of new skills and forever working to learn more, keeping his progression moving forward year after year. That appetite for growth is what keeps his jiu jitsu evolving.

He loves passing that knowledge on. Drawing on his background in education, he delivers an evidence-based approach to teaching martial arts, breaking down technique with clarity, structure, and genuine care for the people in front of him. It's coaching built on curiosity, expertise, and a real commitment to helping others grow.

Setting up a choke is all about patience. The grip has to be clean, the angle has to be right, and the pressure comes last

MATTHEW ORMOND

Brown Belt, Team Lead Kids Coach

As a BJJ brown belt who started training in 2020, he has built his jiu jitsu the old-fashioned way, through repetition, patience, and a willingness to do the unglamorous work. He is a workhorse in the truest sense, drilling techniques over and over until he understands every component of them, not just the finish. That habit has given him an extremely well-rounded game built on genuine comprehension rather than shortcuts.

All smiles on the mats today. Good rounds, good people, and the kind of session that reminds you why you keep coming back

Matthew deliberately puts himself in difficult positions. Sitting in the awkward, uncomfortable places while learning a technique until they stop being awkward. It’s why he comes out highly successful in what he knows. He can then pass that understanding on, because he's felt every part of it himself.

As the team lead on our kids' classes, he brings that same detail and patience to younger students, along with a wonderful sense of storytelling that keeps them genuinely engaged. He has an instinct for turning technique into narrative, which holds their attention, makes the learning stick, and keeps them coming back for more.

He talks about his kids the way he coaches — with patience, pride, and a genuine interest in who they're becoming.
